What Are Ways To Find Out Your Career Path?

January 5, 2010 – 5:09 pm

I am trying to figure out which career to go into, I am considering starting my own business, but I don’t know what to start, I am college educated and I have prior working experience. I enjoy marketing but it is very hard to get into the industry with no experience. I have no clue on what type of career to go into.
I am just not happy and I am trying to make the most out of my life and I want to make an impact in the world.
I’m not sure if other people have these concerns, but this is certainly something that I have been going through for a long time. if some one could please help or at least give thier thoughts it would be nice.

  2. Sorry but these days you don’t find a career path. It finds you. Or more specifically society dictates what you will do based on economic need.
There’s very few jobs to choose from today. You’ll be lucky to find any work at all. You end up doing whatever job employers happen to be hiring at the time. Your career will become whatever type work you are fortunate enough to find.
And because employers only hire based on your experience your next job will be doing the same work you did on your last job as will the next job after that and so on. These days your first job closely determines your career for the rest of your life. Since you say you already have some work experience your career path might already be decided by it.
Unless you’ve been working for many years already don’t even think about starting your own business. Ninety percent of all businesses fail within the first year anyway. And the only business one can realistically hope to start would be some type of service related to the work you have already been doing for many years.
Sorry for the pessimism but these are extremely dismal times we’re in. The old days of the American Dream where you could become whatever you wanted through hard work are long gone. Good luck.

  5. I do have these concerns. It has been torturing me for years too! No matter what I do, I can’t find any purpose in it.
I have seek a lot of career counselling but it always led to the same end. “You must decide for yourself what is best for you”

  6. try working at various different jobs until you find the job that is just right for you. It may take years of this trial and error approach but only you can decide which job it is that you want to make your profession. Take me for instance I was into construction for over thirty years and one morning I woke up and quit my job and went to work at a local vacation resort as a maintainance worker ll (engineer) and I completely love this job I’m very happy with what I do and don’t see myself leaving this job until I retire in another fifteen maybe twenty years.
    Good luck
