I’m Interested In A Career In Working With Therapy Dogs. Where Can I Find More Information?
January 23, 2010 – 4:52 amI’d always wanted to be a vet, until one day I realized that there was no way I could handle the blood and gore and putting animals to sleep. Now, I think the job I’d love to have would be working with therapy dogs. What kind of schooling would this require? Also, where can I find more information? Ideally, I’d like to train and bring dogs to hospitals and nursing homes, but I’m open to other animals and ideas.
Thanks!

“If you are a licensed mental health or social welfare professional then it is possible to include your pet in the course of practicing your profession. For courses of study specific to AAT see the course work list.. There are programs for teaching a person to become a trainer of service dogs (which would be a paid position) or similar. Generally, however, AAT might supplement a more traditional career rather than itself being a career.”http://www.assistancedog.org/college/deg…http://www.naturalhealers.com/qa/animal.…

Just about anyone can train their “pet dog” to be a therapy dog via home classes and home training so long as the dog has a good temperament. The only “career” with therapy work is to be the person who runs the therapy dog tests.
I’m pretty sure that the therapy dog organizations are non-profit (meaning people run them without being paid) and you do NOT get paid to bring the dogs in to do their therapy work.
So if you want a career that pays you probably won’t find one doing this work. SERVICE DOG training is a possibility but even then, i doubt they pay enough to make a living off of. The real money would be in having your own professional training service (which would require years of apprenticing under multiple trainers.)
The biggest careers that pay in the dog world are things like vet, vet tech, grooming, pet stores (no selling pups), and personal trainer. Here:http://www.akc.org/public_education/care…

Go to your local rehabilitation center.
Ask to do some volunteer work with them and if you like it. Talk to a case manager to see where you can further your desire to work with them.
