I Want To Work With Animals But I Need To Find A Career Path That Suits Me…any Thoughts?

February 24, 2010 – 4:54 am

anyone who has corresponded on here with me might already know that I was raised rescuing and rehabilitating abused and abandoned farm animals with my father…now that I’m older I still feel the need to reach out and help…I’m taking an on-line class in pet first aid and my life’s goal (besides being a good mother to my children someday) is to open a safe haven for “unwanted” animals of all types, however I don’t expect to be able to do that anytime soon…being a recent high school grad I’d like to start thinking about furthering my education…I need to be able to continue working throughout any college I might attend (although right now I’m working as a housekeeper, and I tried getting a position as a nanny but that didn’t work out-mom’s tend to prefer that you be a certain age before nanny their children, which is understandable-I’d really prefer to work with animals during college but w/out college degree I can’t)
what should I do-during & after college?
I don’t want to be a vet

  3. you could open a shelter for stray and unwanted animals and keep them until they are adopted out to other people.
you only have to be eighteen to volunteer at shelters and kennels so you could gain some more experience to put on your college applicatons.
    good luck!!!

  5. You can get free on-line training for FEMA Animal Rescue Certification. Go to MuttShack Animal Rescue http://www.muttshack.org.
These on-line courses can be used for college credits. 3 credits per course, while you get trained in Animal Rescue! Speak to your college counselor.
You can also do a lot of on-line rescue work. Posting notices for groups, writing stories, helping with fundraising. Join the MuttShack Volunteers Yahoo Group.

  6. You certainly could look into working with a vet. Veterinary medicine is an exciting field. If you like to challange yourself and have an affinity for animals talk to some vets. They always need a extra hand

  7. Look at answer to prev Q. You could still learn a lot from a Vet by being an assistant. I’m sure some would hire you based on the skills you have, and train you. :-) Cheers, luv.
You need to know about animal psych., meds, taking care of their young etc. Handling abused or recognizing abused if you don’t already. Talk to ya!
    Can u walk yet? :-)

  9. You can take an on line or at home course in Veterinary …I took a course from Harcourt at home…Got my degree…You can do that…Make small payments per month and get your degree..I find my college in the back of a magazine…Advertises home courses…Then you could work part time as a vet…Start a grooming business…I hired someone to stay with my sick pet when I worked during the day…Possibilities are endless…After college the world is yours…You can be a assistant to your Vet…be the Vet…You could board pets while owner vacations.., Work, or just have a dogie day care. For people like me who want their pets not to be alone when they work or travel…Be a trainer…Good money in that one…If pets are trained right then owners don’t hit them cause they obey…On line and at home courses let you do it at your pace…You have a year to complete…I did it in 7 months…If you get done sooner…You get your degree sooner..Good luck….

  10. How about starting your own pet=sitting service?
    Or pet walking service?
Or pet service for those who are working long hours and want their pets let out and fed and talked to?
How about starting a pet shrink service (I am serious). People who think their pets are lonely or depressed will pay good money for that!
How about starting your own homemade pet food services with home delieveries?
How about going to peoples homes and washing/clipping nails, etc…older people really have a need for this, as some can’t even get themselves out the door to the doctor…
Speaking of this, how about picking up peoples pets and taking them to the vets for their check ups and such?
All these ideas can start on a low scale and build up if you want…

  11. Try Petsmart. You could work as a bather which means lots of direct contact with the dogs and maybe one day become a groomer.

  12. Vet was the obvious answer, because it pays a decent wage, and is much in demand, while volunteer places like pet shelters pay a stinking or no wage. You could work on a farm.
Does working at a Zoo interest you?
There are jobs related to animals, but not the kind of rescue work you have done so far, such as
    * animal food, pet food
    * animal training … like dogs for law enforcement, guide dogs for the blind
    * Sea World type of stuff, such as working with the dolphins
    * National Park Service has to manage wild animals, like bears
    * Horse Racing & stables for recreational riding
    * Environmental research related to global climate change … someone is going to the North Pole to track the Polar Bears
Take a look at education in Animal Management in General
