I Want To Find A New Career That Pays Well But Don’t Know Where To Start Or What I Want To Do Can Anyone Help?

February 1, 2010 – 5:00 am

Im 26yrs old, I trained as a graphic designer but have not used this skill for more than four years, I want a career that I can enjoy that pays more than just the bills! But I have no idea where to start or what to do, i’ve had several jobs since leaving uni but none of which I have enjoyed. Im worried soon I’ll be to old to retrain or find a new career, if anyone has any suggestions or advice where to start? I would be very gratefull…

  4. Check http://www.salary.com or other salary sites for salary information. You can get basic salary information for free or you can buy specific salary reports.
In general, determine what you love and what you are good at, and try to find a career that blends both.
I found out about a company that helps people “test-drive” a career – check http://www.vocationvacations.com for more info. It can be a good way to see what a job is really like without having to leave your existing job.
You’re never too old, especially at just 26, to retrain or change careers. In fact, you should always keep learning and keeping your skills current, adding new skills, and so on. This will help keep you marketable throughout your career.
You may also consider hiring a career counselor or coach, or talking with the career services center in your university. State Departments of Labor also have useful resources.

  6. First, get to networking. Join an organization/club with other professionals that have the same job/career you want. Many times, a good job doesn’t come by looking in the paper. Sounds stupid, but its true. Also, maybe take a class where you’d find the people with the career you’d like. Chances are,s ome of these people are in the field and maybe able to give you a lead towards a job. Also, put your skills to use and have a good portfolio. Put together a web site demonstrating your talents and have references available that can confirm your talents.
