I Need To Chose A Career, Where Can I Go To Find Out Which One Is Right For Me?
January 19, 2010 – 11:01 amI am a mother of two whose working on her GED. I need to chose a career that would be right for me. I don’t want to go into a career I might not like then have to start over, I am not getting any younger and fear that I might waste half my life figuring out what I want to do. I am just soo confused and am in a rut I can’t get out of b/c of fear.

My best advice to you would be to take a career inventory test. John Holland came up with a really good one, it’s called the Self Directed Search (I actually took it.. and it matched up perfectly to the direction in which I am going). You can take it for under $10 and it will give you a bunch of different careers that would suit you, your personality, and your lifestyle!
Best of luck to you!

Choose a career based on what you like to do. Do you like working with children? Then go into early childhood education or teaching K-6. Do you like finance/ Then go into banking or something similiar. It’s all based on what you like to do, and no one here will know that.

If you live in the US there are agencies called One Stops and they are located at your county’s agency for employment, social services. The services are free and they can help you decide which direction you should go in. They’ll help you with getting the certification, college education, uniforms, tools, skills you need to get the career you want.
But, hey, most people change their careers several times. don’t think that you’re a failure if you land in a career that you later don’t like. I was in college for eight years studying english and science and theatre until my husband busted my lip and I left him, winding up on welfare when I decided I wanted to be a social worker. Life has a way of helping you out.
