How Do I Find Out What Career I Want?

January 2, 2010 – 11:22 am

I’m 23, 24 in 3 months and I have no idea what I want to do with the rest of my life as far as career goes
I’m hopefully graduating from college next spring (2007) with a degree/bachelors in science, micro biology, but that’s not what I want to do with the rest of my life anymore.
I’m really intelligent/smart yet not good at anything
How do I find out what I would be good at/happy with/make a lot of money with.

  2. You need to sit down and make a list of the things that are important to you. You will be lucky if you can find a job that you are good at and happy with and make a lot of money. It just doesn’t always happen that way. If you have a degree it doesn’t usually matter a whole lot whats its in. I have a lot of friends who just graduated or are going to and have no idea what they are going to do with their lives. It could be trial and error too. Just remember that you will never be 100 perecnt happy with anything. There will always be parts of the job or people that you just don’t get along with.

  4. Spend some time with yourself to answer this question: “What can I do that I would enjoy doing and would not feel like I was working?”
You have your whole life ahead of you. If your “job” is something that is a job, then you will not enjoy it. If instead the work feels like “play” to you, then you’ll never watch the clock, you WILL have fun, and you’ll be paid for doing it.
Since you are almost trained in micro-biology, there must be something in that field you enjoyed doing, some course you enjoyed in the 4 years of college. What was it? Then consider what kind of work would let you continue in that area.
    Good luck my friend!

  6. Just look for something interesting in job openings and try to get it, if you like it, keep going with it, if not move on. I am in the exact same position as you are…different major though.

  7. You should explore what kind of jobs are available, and study the profiles. Then you can plan on one career and strive for it (study accordingly, get another qualification etc.)

  8. Trial and error. Also keep in mind that money does not equal happiness.
