How Did You Find Your Way To The Career You Have?

January 12, 2010 – 4:58 pm

Give me some good advice on what to do to figure out what I want to do for a career? I’m in college now, but I need some guidelines. So just tell me some experiences and stuff you went through looking for the job you have.

  2. Im 24 and graduated from college 2 years ago. I majored in history and economics, but find myself working in the sports industry. I went to a liberal arts college, so i got a lot of background in many different areas including the fine arts, public relations, etc, that have been solid for me in my experience in sports. I ended up getting a paid internship out of college at a top university in their athletic department. From there, i got a position as a customer service coordinator for a minor league baseball team. I dont know where i will go next, but i know that the classes and work experience i gained while in college and during the summers between college really helped me on my resume. I would reccommend taking public speaking classes in school if you can, because it is always good to have, no matter what field you decide to get into.
Basically, once you start applying for jobs after college, do not shoot too high, but do not sell yourself short. Not everyone can come out of college and make $50k a year. And dont think you can get your dream job right away. The best way is to start at the first step of the ladder and work your way up. Often times, as i have found out in the sports industry, businesses and companies like to hire within.
In college, like i said, make sure you get some well rounded courses, pick a major and also pick one or two minors if your college allows it. This gives you the chance to take classes that may be worthwhile in any career. Two good ones to have are business and communications. If your college offers career counseling services, i would reccommend going to them your junior, even your sophomore year. They can help you with your resumes, cover letters, looking for internships, and even summer jobs that will look good in the future.
    Good luck!

  3. keep taking courses for different jobs and you’ll know which way you want to go, for now talk to counselors or people in different fields and see r u a people person, go for counselor or do you want to be with kids,,do you like to help people or do you don’t want to deal with people, these are all factors that matter when making your choice as to your job your seeking.

  4. Most people nowadays have more than one career in their lifetime. You just have to try out a lot of different things that you might be interesting and try to figure out what you are good at doing. Then, once you figure out what you are good at doing and find interesting, you can look for a job that requires those skills. This can take a long time- I didn’t find my career until I was in my early 30′s, and even though I had a degree, I had to go back to school for more education to do what I do. Some of my friends have similar stories. Basically, we just tried a lot of stuff out until we figured out what we liked.

  5. Hi Lauren…I am 29 and I am running my own company now. Before at this time, I was working my *** off making reports and facilitating or recording meetings etc. 5 days after grad i already had a job. I was a clerk in a distributor company. It was not a glamorous job, but as a fresh grad I was so optimistic that whatever I was working at that time I will learn from it. My contract terminated that left me jobless. While waiting for an answer to my application to a multinational company I sell dry goods in the aim not to ask money to my parents. after a month I got the job. stayed in the job for 8 years. There were times that I despise my job, but I do it anyway coz of good pay, great benefits, some perks. I stayed for my eyes were fixed to my goal that I will work and save for I will have my own business before I reach 30. Today I have a few people who do the reports for me sell stuffs for me…I am answering questions in the net while few of my people are on the field doing what i was doing few years back. Set your eyes on your future plans. Quoting Einstein “GREAT SPIRITS ALWAYS ENCOUNTER VIOLENT OPINIONS FROM MEDIOCRE MINDS.” Hear your heart’s desire and make that your plan…hope I helped…take it easy
