In Australia there is a detailed database available online. I found info about both my grandfathers who served in WW1. There must be something similar there - maybe try searching military records or museums, with the information you have, or contact the army.

If I were you, I would first contact the Department of Veterans' Affairs, to discover how you can learn the basic details of your father's service. Once you know what unit he served with, you can find out where he served and what he might have seen.

Good suggestions. Once you contact Veterans Affiars and get a copy of his service record, see if you can find an alumni group for the unit / Division / Battalion / Company that your father served in. You might still be able to find a few guys who knew him during the war? At least you will be able to find out more about the battles, etc., your father fought in. Do some research on this, and pass it down in your family to your children. Be proud of your father's service to his country, it's part of your family history, and it's great that you have an interest in it.
I looked into the service record of my granfather's brother, who was killed in WWII. I found guys he served with, wrote letters to them, etc., I'm glad I did it.
