Yes, it is very good to see on a resume that (example) one while unemployed worked at a food kitchen.

Your dad is right. Employers will want to know what you did in between jobs, and volunteer work is a good thing to put in there! It shows that you have a strong work ethic, and that you’re devoted to community service. This will look good to most any employer.

he’s right but its also nice to have a paying job because once you get old enough to pay for school….your whole life will just become expensive….so if your not too busy….getting a job and doing some light volunteering would look even more amazing on your resume.

I certainly agree with your Dad, and the others who have answered your question. The other way it can help apart from the obvious ones of filling your career gap, giving you experience, building skills,self esteem and perhaps helping a charity is that you have the opportunity for gaining a current “work” reference.
If you perform well during the volunteer stint, the “employer” will often be happy to provide a reference when you apply for paid work, and your performance as a volunteer will be considered indicative of how you may act in the paid role.

Absolutely!!
It not only helps with your self worth, self esteem, but it shows true humility that even in times when you are in need you are willing to give to the community.
The economy is ruff, there is a lot of need out there , we all feel it . But when I am hungry ,if I work for a food bank or help with a food drive I see what it is to truly be in need of food.
It would be awesome if you can volunteer in the career choice you are pursuing than you will not only be helping out another person, but you will be getting “free” training and the stepping stones will be put in place for your next job , in the field you desire.
I wish you lots of luck and am proud to see that we, as a group are still able to give when we ourselves don’t realize we have something to.
