Can Someone Find Success In A Marketing Career Without Being A Type-a Personality Salesperson?

January 31, 2010 – 10:54 am

I’m very interested in international marketing questions – specifically market research and logistics, but I’m hesitant to jump into a MBA program since the job descriptions I read all emphasize the required background in sales. I may or may not be good at sales – I’ve never done it. So at 32, I have my doubts as to how I could gain the experience needed to compete with new college grads. I know that I’m good with analysis and communication. But I don’t know how I do in customer-facing persuasion.
Any insight from recruiters or experienced international marketing professionals is especially requested.

  2. Yes.
You will have to be willing to change a little though. I am not a type A personality and I have found a great place in a company where I am managing my own team. I love it and I don’t have to be a maniac to do it. I did go through some changes to shed some of my self confidence issues and loose some of my shyness. But it has been worth it!! I am on the road to sauces and am excited to be there. Get in touch if you are interested in hearing more.

  3. I believe Yes you can. I own my own business with Mary Kay. I am not the sales type but i work well with people and have great communication skills at least I think so:)
I find people are sceptical of everything theses days and building a relationship is key so if you are good with communications can build a trust you can make a sale.
I believe in what i sell otherwise I don’t think I would be in sales.
